Some time ago I mentioned how we had been stuck, unable to remove the charging handle, many times. After much study, I determined the locking pin (in the charge plug) was gravity released and could easily become stuck with any sort of side-load. Once in this state, the button remains inserted, unable to release and try again. The usual cause is side-loading from the heavy cable. Pulling the heavy cable to reduce the weight and side-loading on the plug before pushing the button ensures the latch can drop.

Because the button is short and smooth, there is no way to grip it to pull it out. The last time we were stuck (in 45*c/114*F weather) happened to be outside a Big Lots department store and I wandered the isles until I spotted a pack of metal nail files which I used to pry the button out. Those remain in our glove box along with an IC puller.

You need to pry evenly on both sides to pull the button back out. It may be possible to slack the cable and wiggle the plug back and forth to encourage the pin to drop, I believe that happened at our most recent charge.

However, our EVGo stations have a modification to the button to allow you to pull the button out with just your fingers.
