I have been looking at what is available. They aren't cheap. They run in the neighborhood of $1200 CAD. Since I charge at home 99% of the time I only use CHAdeMO when I travel. So far there are sufficient CHAdeMO chargers available on Vancouver Island/British Columbia with more planned. I haven't seen any loss of ports to date. I hope I don't have to go with an adaptor. I will definitely wait to see what happens when NACS becomes the norm. A NACS adaptor might be more useful if CHAdeMO EV's are still on the road. I doubt my 2016 Kia Soul EV will be since it may be at least 10 years before NACS replaces the present ports. There are several videos on YouTube on CHAdeMO adapters.
Could you post where you found one for $800?Under $800. I'm still waiting to see what NACS does, but would probably jump on one at $500. CCS1 should be around here for a while.
$759USD (plus battery). The video, you posted... is for thisCould you post where you found one for $800?
Many thanks
I think you'll be fine in BC for sure - I got one from the manufacturer in China using alibaba.com and they work on flo/chargepoint/random stations, but for some reason don't really work on BCHydro ones (but BCHydro ones all have Chademo); 95% of the time, I rarely have to fast charge if at all, so the adapter is just sitting there collecting dust.I thought you must be quoting in US$. There are are few in that range. Unfortunately by the time I add shipping, taxes and the exchange rate the cost is $1200 CAD. I was hoping you found one in the $800 CAD range.
BCHydro in my area just added 15 Charging Stations to their network and they all have at least one CHAdeMO Port. Gives me some comfort that CHAdeMO is being supported going forward at least for now.
Thanks for the information. I have decided to hold off doing anything for now. I did see either on these forums or a YouTube video that BC Hydro does not work that well with these adaptors. Stay warm .I think you'll be fine in BC for sure - I got one from the manufacturer in China using alibaba.com and they work on flo/chargepoint/random stations, but for some reason don't really work on BCHydro ones (but BCHydro ones all have Chademo); 95% of the time, I rarely have to fast charge if at all, so the adapter is just sitting there collecting dust.
It works when it does though....so entirely up to you whether you're willing to get it. I would say it's useful if you regularly take your Kia Soul more than the 150km avg on a regular basis (say 1-2 times a week), then the adapter is justified. I'll let you know how well they work in Saskatoon (just moved there from Vancouver) so definitely feeling the range drop when it's -25C (-13F?) out....about 120km at 100%, but will drop fast if you leave the car out at a strip mall to get things.
LOL might have been me (I did a few videos testing them) but i don't recall filming a bchydro one, but the manufacturer said to plug a laptop into the adapter and send them the info and they'll give me an firmware update to make it work lol.... basically the factory built the entire device on emulators so they don't have every communication protocol in there, hence why sometimes it works and sometimes does not. I'm wondering eventually if I can just rip out the chademo and replace it with a CCS port directly to the DC, probably salvaged from a Kia Niro EV or something after they open up NACS. That way I will only need a NACS-CCS adapter. But that's a pipe dream, and assuming the car lasts long enough. Thanks for the information. I have decided to hold off doing anything for now. It’s a charming little car. I love it-big enough to carry things and be seen but not so big it’s annoying. The box part is terrible for aero but you didn’t get this car for cross country road trips….though tbh with adequate cooling (like heat dissipation) you could do it, if chargers were about 100km apart.Hi Fellow clean air lovers!
It's interesting what's out there. I just got my 2016 Soul EV+ last week. My first EV! I love driving it, it's smoother than the leaf, and had fewer miles than the GolfEV that I test drove. SOOOO smooth!!! Such a pleasure to drive.
I'm just getting started with the charger systems discrepancies. I've found Tesla, Blink, EVCS, and ENPHASE charging stations in Newport Oregon. Lincoln City has Tesla and Rivian chargers side by side at the factory mall. The EVCS has been by far the easiest to use. Has the CHaDeMo system. The app reported progress to me a block away at my favorite watering hole.
