Got new E4000 battery and BMS for Soul 2015 under warranty

Here’s my experience:

-I’m original owner and bought in December 2014

-I’m an extremely low mileage user in California. As of November 2024, I have ONLY 16,700 MILES.

-No problem until two years ago (2022) when my range started to drop noticeably to about 80 miles. After many visits to the Kia Service Department. They told me my car was fine and the manufacturer will NOT do anything until the SOH drops to 70%.

-It took nearly 2 years for my SOH to drop to 70% because I’m a low mileage driver. In Sept. 2024 my SOH finally met their criteria and they ordered new batteries (OEM) and new BMS, which took about a month to get here.

- I had no problems until the week before my Kia appointment. Frighteningly, my car battery would shut down when I stepped on the brakes hard. I would feel a THUNK and my car cut out. Fortunately, after re-starting I was able to drive. My braking caused two more incidents driving to my appointment. Kia said this was symptom of my bad batteries.

-About a few days later, I picked up my car with these new parts:

37510F06 BPA+BMS Replacement & BMS S/W Upgrade 1065 WK:

1 377510-E4203 Pack Assy-Battery

1 37513-E4201FFF 37-37-000 Battery Management S

Also installed were new harness according to invoice.

-All of this was covered under my original warranty which will expire next month. My new parts are covered for 12 months or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first).

FYI, the battery recall did not affect my car, but I’m not convinced. (I did get the prelim notification but my car did not show up on the VIN Recall site.)

I trying to be optimistic that I can get 5 to 7 years more life from these new batteries. Hope this information helps!

Do be optimistic. You have a pack with new E400 cells. These have a better longevity than the older E375 cells in your original car. Your new pack 377510-E4203 Pack Assy-Battery. Current cost $25484.52

I got my new battery a few weeks ago on Oct 18, 2024. I too had weird issues with the old battery, but not the same braking issue as you. My replacement battery was authorised due to a "seriously malfunctioning" HV battery not for meeting the 70% limit.

And yes the original car with the older E375 cells was not subject to the 'fire-safety' recall.

How is the range on your 'new' car.
Does the real range match the expected range on the GOM.
Is it more or less than you expected?

My car (2016, 59,000 miles) shuts down like you describe. It has done it about six times now in the last 2-3 weeks. First couple of times it seemed random, but now I realize that it seems to be triggered by heavier than normal braking. Then yesterday morning while accelerating it went into turtle mode, back and forth several times. I took it to the Kia place this morning. Fingers crossed for a <70% SOH.
 
I'm an long-time owner of a 2015 Soul-EV in So-Calif; nice mild weather and always level-2 charged to 80%, in garage.
I purchased the car at KIA-Cerritos, Calif in Feb-2015. Car has only 30K miles and is still within the 10-year warranty.
The original Hi-Voltage battery started failing during last few months. I have been testing the battery lately (using Soul-EV-Spy/VGate ) and get a repeatable SOH=62%.

I will be taking the car into KIA-Cerritos soon for an official SOH test, and their SOH results.

I welcome any advice on how to respond to whatever KIA Service does these days with these Hi-Voltage battery cases.

See my long series of posts in the "Car stuck at dealer for 3 months..." topic for what may end up happening. The fact that you are so close to the 10-year warranty expiration has me wondering if they might just do a band aid software update to get you to get past the warranty period, then when you end up turteling later state that the warranty period is over. Good luck in any case! Let us know how it works out.

My advice is not to mention anything about your readings from SoulEVSpy, which the dealer will immediately pooh-pooh. Make a copy of PS 548 and request they carry out the procedure in it exactly as laid down, explaining that you are well aware that applying updates prior to reading the BMS data will prevent a correct SOH reading. Highlight the relevant words on the copy and draw attention to the highlighted text.

That should result in a dealer report to KIA Corporate and, in turn, a replacement battery.

I have two 2015 Soul EVs. Both have now had replacement batteries under warranty.
The first process was very easy. The second just easy.
My experience is not the common one, but let's hope it will be yours too.

My white car got a new battery 5 years ago.
My reading of 69.5% SOH matched the official one and a new battery was authorised.

I bought my blue car in May 2015.
I got a new battery last month.
The final process was easy. I took it in they decided the battery was failing.
I kept the car for two more weeks while they ordered a new pack.
Replacement took a few hours.
The important part for me was that I have a full service history.

E4050 from Kia 2015
E4300 from Kia 2018

My understanding is that they are same capacity 40 Ah, and if that is true, are they compatible to put together?

Thank you, nukar, for sharing your experience! I'm in a similar situation: Original owner (Black/Red EV+) bought in November, 2015 in So. California; now with only 23,000 miles. I've been waiting for the SOH to drop and I'm now down to the low 40 miles when 100% charged. It's been going on and off into turtle mode when under mild stress like a freeway on-ramp. And yes, I've had several THUNK shut-downs after braking; not fun! I've started driving slower, with more moderate use of brakes. In the next few weeks I'll be taking it in to the dealer for the SOH check.

Which leads to my only question; I'd really appreciate you letting us know which dealership did the fast diagnosis and speedy work.
If it's within a 40 mile range from me, I'll definitely take it there.

Hopefully, with the new battery your range is exceeding even more than the original and be good for many years.

My original H-V battery (2015 EV) is now down to a SOH=61 %, and I have an appointment setup soon with my KIA Dealer/Service (Cerritos, Calif) to measure the SOH. They say they need to keep the car overnight. I didn't get a good explanation as to why. I believe that the SOH process is a simple one for the dealer service; maybe an hour or 2 ?. Maybe it's more ?
Would appreciate any info on Dealer/Service experiences/troubles as to this process: "measure/assess the H-V Battery SOH".

Extracting BMS data for range concerns prior to performing updates

It takes about 30 seconds to do this. It is important that they understand the word 'before'.

...For any customers experiencing a range concern with their vehicle, all Battery Management System (BMS) current data should be extracted and reviewed to verify the current battery State of Health (SOH) before performing any updates. Applying updates may clear current data requiring multiple drive cycles to re-learn and view accurate battery health...

Thx for the good info and reminder. I will stress that to the Service greeter and hope the word gets to the actual service Tech.
Makes me realise how lucky I am to have a local Kia Service.
When I turn up without an appointment the mechanic will come over to say hello.
He asks what's wrong and if it takes less than a minute he will do it instantly.
He's friendly, capable, and is happy for me to photograph everything.
This may explain why I say this process is easy.

KIA heaven! Many dealers have reception staff who are largely ignorant of the products, will authoritatively talk nonsense, invent ridiculous tales and try to avoid you talking to the technician. I'm not as lucky as you, but I have patiently persevered to get reasonable service by challenging the nonsense. Forums like this are a valuable resource.
 
Hi All,
Thx for all the support concerning my "Battery Reduced- SOH".
Finally, I got the KDS diagnostics printout (5 pgs.) from Cerritos KIA and my car SOH now is 59.5 % and is still within warranty. A Techline case has been opened and the next step is for "KIA Corporate Tech to inspect my car at Cerritos".
Hope that goes well.
This car has been a great local daily driver and we miss the days it's at the service shop.
I'm open to any current experiences from this forum about the next steps, and how long they might be, until the car has a new battery and ready to go ?
